So, I sorta have a Leica S2 for a while…
It's ridiculous, really. This camera is worth more than my car, and if you factor in the lenses, it's worth more than yours and mine together.
If you're wondering what this is, it's Leica's medium format sensor, dSLR-bodied camera system. When I first saw huge prints from this camera at Photokina 2010, I nearly cried. Seriously. It's that good.
The camera and three lenses arrived just before the holidays (on loan, on loan!), but the holidays being holidays, yesterday was the first day I had to do anything with it.
Sadly, the day disappointed. I had grand plans of shooting sunrise over Mt. Shasta (a lovely, lovely mountain in northern California for those not familiar), from the "Shasta Valley Vista Point" (at least according to Foursquare) off of I-5. You can witness the pathetic progress of the morning from my arrival to my departure.
On the way home I pulled off the highway for the nearly-reasonable-but-still-not-great vista you see above. It's… m'eh. But you know, it's my first Leica photo of note, so that means I have to share it. Obviously I'll come back in a few months and cringe; in a few years I'll wonder why the hell I posted this.
I'll blame it on the sake.
But what the ƒ is this…
I don't know if anyone reading this has experience with one of these cameras (I've tweeted and facebooked this request and so far not one of several thousand people have responded) but this particular S2 has a gnarly problem. I'm guessing it's a stuck shutter or something of the like, but basically half the image (straight down the middle when viewed horizontally) is darker/brighter than the other half. Not by much, and straight out of camera it's not visible, but once you start pushing it it shows up. It's probably visible in the image above because I haven't done anything to remove it; the whole thing is so damn depressing that I'm pretty much in denial right now.
Other than that what do I think of the camera? I haven't got a clue. I really want to do something amazing with it, but this line/shutter issue is probably going to put the kibosh on all my plans. I'm heading up to Portland for a couple of days and then driving back down the coast, and will have this camera with me, however now that I know of this line thingy I won't be expecting much. I also had a really, really cool shoot planned simply because I had this beast in-hand that I may have to put on hold, which really sucks.
So hey, if anyone knows what this is, and if there's a way to fix it, please do let me know. It's on loan from a friend, not from Leica, so I don't have a Ghostbuster to call.
Who you gonna call?!
Here's another shot from this rubbish day…
