The Point Arena Lighthouse is a unique opportunity to chase the light around
The greatest part is you can actually stay there for days, rent out the keeper's quarters, watch the storms and stars sweep across the point of land closest to Hawaii on the California coast, and this place is a celebration of light. What could be better than a looking through a magnificent fresnel lens (in the museum) and climbing to the top of this classic structure and watching the waves.
Photographing iconic structures is challenging to come up with images that are not destined for the postcard rack. I took some of those, of course, but taking enough time to explore this space enabled me to watch for the unexpected. The shapes and textures of this structure were fascinating, and suited perfectly to see this in black and white.
This image was shot with a Canon 30D, 10mm focal length, ISO 160, f3.5 at 1/200 sec. Processed in Aperture, Silver Effects Pro, and topaz Adjust (for the border).
