This image was captured over the summer while attending the Thunder Over Michigan Airshow. It was one of the largest airshows in the country involving all WWII planes as well as a war battle reenactment. I shot this event through the press pit and was able to get some great images of planes and the flying acrobatics but the ones that seemed to capture the spirit were these war reenactment individuals. During the day they would do two shows in front of the grand stands. They had to drive by the photographer press area to get there and as they did they acted as though they were coming off the battlefield. Some of them were injured, dirty and torn, very realistic. This one young reenactment soldier, drove by and from the back of his truck saw me taking the photo and provided me with this great image.
It was a decent image in color, but the black and white gave it the feel of actually being there during that time. This is where creating an image knowing that the black and white version will actually tell the story you intended when you shot the image. My appreciation also goes out to all that have served and are serving in every branch of our military. Thank you for all your efforts…
Technical aspects of the image:
It was taken with a Nikon D7000 and a 70-200 f2.8 lens. Shot at 1/125 ss and at f/20. Processed in Aperture and then round tripped to Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 where the default adjustment was used. There was some adjustment to exposure and a few control points added to balance the sky.
